Over 250 people attended MidTown Cleveland, Inc.’s 26th Annual Meeting at the InterContinental Hotel on June 18, 2009. Jim Haviland, executive director of MidTown Cleveland, Inc., gave an update on the organization’s successes in 2008 and vision for the future.

The keynote presentation was delivered by Mark Falanga, senior vice president of MMPI, and Brian Tucker, publisher and editorial director of Crain’s Cleveland Business, moderated the discussion and a question and answer session. Falanga updated attendees on the Medical Mart and Convention Center project MMPI, Inc. is overseeing in Cleveland and acknowledged that the original site for the Medical Mart was planned for MidTown. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has proposed a final Cleveland Innerbelt reconstruction plan that will eliminate the Carnegie and Prospect Avenue ramps that provide vital access and connections to the business districts, institutions and neighborhoods they serve.

MidTown Cleveland, Inc. and the Cleveland Clinic issued a joint statement on May 21, 2009 to Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) before the close of the Public Comment Period on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS).

In summary, MidTown businesses and the Cleveland Clinic remain opposed to Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) Preferred Recommended Alternative (PRA) which eliminates access ramps at Prospect and Carnegie Avenues. MidTown Cleveland, Inc. supports the use of Federal American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds to begin construction of a new Innerbelt bridge, repair of the existing bridge and commence the planning for the Opportunity Corridor linking I-490 with University Circle. However, MidTown Cleveland, Inc. does not support the current ODOT Innerbelt Trench Design Alternative which eliminates the Carnegie and Prospect Avenue ramp system.

At this time, MidTown has not heard from ODOT, FHWA or the City of Cleveland on our position. FHWA and ODOT are currently addressing the Public Comments and are expected to prepare a Final Environmental Impact Statement by the end of June.
